The Stylist and the Styled: Dunsin Wright and Tems

Being a public figure in modern times means being constantly scrutinised for what you eat, where you go, what you do, and what you wear, with an emphasis on what you wear. Personal style plays a significant role in branding, which is why stylists exist. They play a very important role in the fashion industry, as they are responsible for putting together outfits for their clients. Anyone can wear clothes, but stylists tell a story with those clothes. They are responsible for most of the pieces seen on celebrities, whether it's for shoots, red-carpet events, or public appearances.

Some celebrities work with multiple stylists while some prefer THE one. While variety is the spice of life, some of the best-dressed are those who have stuck with the one. These stylists have made significant contributions to the way their clients are perceived, staying current with trends and helping them develop an aesthetic that complements their image. An angel gains its wings every time a stylist and their client become a dynamic, multiple angels can now soar thanks to Tems and Dunsin.

The relationship between these two seems electric; it translates into their outfits. When I said earlier that stylists tell a story through clothes, well, Dunsin writes novels. Since she began styling Tems in 2020, she's been pushing harder and making history with her work. She and Tems are keeping fans satisfied, that's for sure. She’s had multiple great hits since they started working together, creating memorable looks on tour, in music videos, at fashion shows, both on and off the red carpet.

There wouldn’t be enough pages to sum up the looks that have kept the media rooms buzzing since Tems’s rise to stardom. What I can do is highlight those which stood out based on the events they were needed for, and with that, here are some of Tems’s red carpet looks styled by Dunsin.

A debut done well was the best way to describe Tems’s first Met Gala outfit. This look was an ode to Karl Lagerfeld's time at Chanel; the corset top featured feathers lining the bust, matched with a dramatic, sculpted headpiece. This look came not long after her 2023 Oscars look, which also featured a headpiece and gained a lot of backlash online, hence why it's next on this list.

For the duo's debut at the Oscars, they chose an ethereal, sculpted white gown from the Ukrainian brand Levar Couture, which stole the attention on the carpet. That evening, all anyone could talk about on social media was the shape of the dress. That must have been Dunsin's intention because when asked about this particular look, she said, "The dress is my way of celebrating my work, celebrating my country, and celebrating the people who are rooting for me. This dress says, "Yes, yes, I am here!”.

Off the carpet, Dunsin doesn’t let Tems’s foot stray too far from our necks. The "Me & U" music video, released last year, features several angelic looks, including a Jacquemus La Robe Piombone Tulle maxi dress, a custom beaded bralette from Jeblanc, and a Megamikaela chainmail dress with a matching headpiece, all outfits that suit the creative direction of the video.

Like I said earlier, there won’t be enough pages to detail the looks this formidable duo has blessed us with over the years, so I’m going to conclude with one of her more recent outfits. She graced the cover of Billboard, and there wasn’t a single look that didn’t devour.

The most impressive thing about Dunsin's work is that she also manages to juggle other all-star clients; her portfolio boasts A-listers such as Sza, Latto, and Central Cee. There's no denying which of them is her favourite.
